Typed letter signed : London, to Colin Robinson, 1945 Dec. 6.

Eliot tells the young poet that he has been impatient about attempting to express "rather difficult ideas which are just beyond your grasp, with an equipment of vocabulary and prosody which is inadequate for poetic expression." He approves of Robinson's appreciation of the poets whom he has mentioned in his letter to him, "especially Landor, Wordsworth and Milton." Eliot advises him to study a subject other than English literature at Oxford, since he will read the English authors in any case, "and it is very much more stimulating to discover the great authors for oneself than to have them pointed out by a tutor [...] before you have come to love them." Instead, Eliot counsels Robinson to choose "some other subject which you might not study for yourself and the knowledge of which will very much enlarge your appreciation of English literature."
